Pre-Swearing In

Well, today is the big day, when I promise to be a PCV for two years. I told myAPCD I am probably going to have a heart attack because the idea is stressing me out, but that's just how I am. We are going to the Embassy in a couple hours for the ceremony, and then we have a day of festivities ahead of us. I should rightfully still be in bed right now, but sometimes when you live in Africa your body says "GET UP!" even if you don't really want to. So,I'll have a little time next week (I'm predicting) and I'll let you know all about it. Wish me luck! Thanks for the e-mails and stuff, they make me day!

Kelly,
Just think that 2 years there will be much easier than 4 years at mines! You'll be great
Love you and miss you

Kelly - I can't begin to tell you how much you have impressed me. You have taken a leap of courage far beyond anything I would have ever considered myself. You have taken a step beyond what 99.9% of your fellow citizens would even consider. You have also done your best to present our Nation in its most positive light and are more effective than the US State Department in quietly sending the message "we care." So, to me, you have already achieved all those objectivs. Now, I ask you to consider carefully your situation and your personal health and safety. We all love an support you dearly and will always back whatever you decide. My point here is that I have been where you have been mentally - should I stay? What will others think of me? What will I think of myself years from now? Make sure you don't confuse near term goals for your long term life objectives. You are "allowed" to change your mind to navigate the waters of life. No one ever has a right to judge you - for you have gone where precious few have gone before. Just want you to know that we are thinking of you and are supportive of your future health and happiness. I know my corny jokes are bad, but really, you didn't have to go Mali to get away from them! Safe journey. Rob Needham

BTW, Kelly, my Kuwaiti student tells me that Ramadan predated Mohammad. Just wondering about the post-Ramadan festivities, usually called Eid.

Wishing some Cherry Garcia to come your way!
